Clean up event and more..
Hello Bali Reef Divers out there! Finally we are back with another update. Bali Reef Divers is still going strong in Amed and we are leaving rainy season behind as we speak. The sun is back again and the conditions at the dive sites are getting better and better.
We have had some amazing encounters during our dives the last two weeks. There is a group of divers here at the moment making video's and pictures of the special creatures living around here. Gede, on of our guides, has a keen eye to find even the smallest macro life out there. Expect some nice pictures of boxer shrimps, harlequin shrimps, stargazers, indian walkman, frogfish, seahorses, decorator crabs, tons and tons of nudebranches and things we still have to find the name from. On one of the last night dives we even spotted a Leopard Shark and caught it on video. It will be uploaded on the Bali Reef Divers Facebook page and also on our Youtube Channel. Diving in Bali has never been better and many people who come here and dive with us tell us it is the best diving they have done so far.
On 01/04/11 there was a beach and underwater clean up event in Amed at Jemeluk Bay. Bali Reef Divers was part of it together with other dive centers from Amed and the Reefcheck organization. We also involved the local people living at Jemeluk Bay and they helped collecting rubbish at the beach. About 14 divers took the plunge to clean the ocean and about 50 locals showed up. We collected more than 600 kg of rubbish, mostly plastic wrappings and bottles. The cool thing about this event was that the people from Amed itself were involved. As a result they organized their own beach clean up last week where more than 200 people showed up. So much appreciated! It seems there still is hope to make Bali a cleaner island. More events will follow!
For those who are thinking about heading to Amed in July and August and do some diving just send us an email and we will give you all the information you need. We have some great package deals for diving and staying at Puri Wirata Dive Resort and Spa. Bali Reef Divers is located at this resort in Amed, East Bali. Your place to stay and dive in Amed! Just have a look around on our website.

The Greatest Show on Earth.... An introduction to Discover Scuba Diving
Once you have taken your first steps in the ocean and looked beneath the surface there is no way back. You will have entered a new world with creatures and animals you have never seen before. You never know what you might see and every time you will discover something new. The underwater world is truely the greatest show on earth. You will want more and more. Diving gives you the opportunity to spend time underwater and explore this world. At Bali Reef Divers we want to give you the experience you are looking for. We have a few programs to help you take your first steps in the ocean. Diving is for everybody and everybody can learn it. You just have to take the plunge!
Amed is the perfect place in Bali to dive for the first time. The Discover Scuba Diving program is a straight forward introduction to diving. Many people think diving is not possible for them because it is to technical or hard to learn. But it is nothing like that! Discover Scuba Diving teaches you a few basic skills in the pool like how to breath underwater and a few safety rules to keep everything nice and secure. After that you will take a dip in the ocean. It is all up to you how long we stay and how deep we go. It takes about 10-15 minutes during your first dive to get comfortable and after that you will be amazed by the abbundance of life down there.
There is a choice between a one dive and two dive discover scuba diving package. If you choose to do one dive we take you to a place close to our resort. If you go for two dives we will take you to Tulamben to see the famous 120 m long USS Liberty Shipwreck. It is probably the easiest wreck dive in the world because you can dive straight from the beach. The ship is only 40-50 meters away from the shore and the top part is just 5 meters below the surface. Your first dive will be on Coral Garden right next to the Liberty. At this dive site you can see blacktip reef sharks and hundreds of different species of fish. Both these dive sites are very easy and suitable for beginners. Thats why Amed is the best place in Bali to start diving! Come and see it with your own eyes and dive with Bali Reef Divers.
Discover Scuba Diving will not give you a certificate so you can't dive on your own after you finished your discover scuba experience. It is just a try out to see if you like it. And if you do like it the next step would be your PADI Open Water Diver course which is a 3-4 days intensive course where you learn all the skills and do 4 ocean dives as well. You will be certified after this and are able to dive anywhere in the world by showing this certificate.
Just check out all the PADI Courses we offer here: http://www.balireefdivers.com/diving/padi-courses
Last week we had a few students who did a Night and Drift Diver Specialty. We did a night dive at the USS Liberty Shipwreck and the Japanese Shipwreck. Probably the best night dives I ever did. At the Liberty wreck we saw two huge spanish dancers and a school of bumphead parrotfish was hanging around for most of the dive. Check out the pictures on our facebook page. Other creatures we saw are Tassled Scorpionfish, Blacktip Reef shark, hawksbill turtle, porcelain crab, devil fish, decorator crab, painted rock lobster and many many more....
Check out the pictures right here:

If you don't want to spend your time studying the theory while you are on a holiday this a perfect option for you. You handle everything back home and the only thing you need to do when you arrive here is jump in the pool and in the ocean!!You just pay a little bit more for your comfort so you don't need to spend time reading your Open Water Diver Manual on your holiday.
Normally the price for e-learning is $120 and the price for our PADI Open Water Diver course is $375. We will give you the PADI Open Water Diver + e-learning for $425. This gives you a $70 discount!!!
This promotion is only possible if you book ahead by sending us an email or contacting us via this website. Take advantage of this offer now!
Bali Reef Divers is not standing still and is constantly looking for ways to give you better deals and we try to create packages that will suit you to give you the best Bali Diving holiday possible. Therefor we have a few diving packages which can be booked on our website. We just added the new Advanced + Enriched Air/Nitrox Diver package. You can find them here:
http://www.puriwirata.com/special-offers/diving-packages.
These are only valid if booked directly from our website.
As for the diving itself we have no complains at all. Some of our guests went to Selang Bay and Chinese Restaurant. These dive sites are the best you can get around Amed and Tulamben. If you want to be the only one out there and see untouched coral reefs teaming with fish these are the places to go and we will take you there. Not many dive centres will go there. You go out with a little jukung boat for about 45 minutes and head towards the most eastern point of Bali. Gili Selang is a small 200 m wide island at that point. It is known for its ripping currents and big waves. This dive site is not for everybody so we only take divers wo have 100+ dives under their belt. But once you are out there and put your head under water you will be rewarded with an amazing dive!! Big fish, sharks, cuttlefish, turtles and much more will be passing by and the vissibility is hardly ever bad. A dive experience you will never forget. But be warned, you will be spoiled after diving there!!
We also took a few Open Water Diver students to the USS Liberty and Coral garden dive sites in Tulamben. One of those dives was exceptional. From the start two black tip reef sharks were following us and they were very curious. When we hit 18 meters a HUGE napoleon fish showed up and he was right in front of us. He didn't seem bothered at all and was looking for something in the rocks. It seemed it was an octopus but he wasnt the only one that saw it. The sharks came to have a look as well and a giant trevelly joined in to see what all this fuzz was about. All this at hardly 1 m in front of us! We looked at it for about 5 minutes. Not to mention this was an amazing dive for these new open water divers! Bali diving at its best!
Macro life we spotted lately includes ghost pipefish, banded pipefish, porcelain crab, painted frogfish and tons of nudebranches. Other creatures we spotted and are worth mentioning are the devil scorpionfish, flying gurnard and the common seahorse. All these just at Jemeluk Bay near our resort.
We are working on some other plans for the near future as well. More about that later. Just keep on checking or website, facebook and youtube pages. Check out the video of the black tip reef sharks at coral garden on our facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/balireefdivers
Alright! More news later for sure. In the meantime make sure you make it out to the ocean and enjoy diving in Bali! Come to Amed and see for yourself what all the talk is about!

Enriched Air Diving...
Bali Reef Divers is the only dive centre in Amed offering Enriched Air or Nitrox. This might change in the future but at the moment we are. So why not take your Enriched Air Diver course with us? Many divers probably heard about Enriched Air or Nitrox but they still seem to have a lot of questions about it. They think it is something very technical or that you need to do some intense training before you can dive with it. The thing is you do need to have some proper training but it is a pretty straight forward 2 day course where you learn about the advantages of Enriched Air Diving and how to use it.
But what is enriched air? Normal air consists of 21% oxygen and 79% Nitrogen. When u change those amounts we are talking about enriched air. With air diving your bottom time is limited by the amount of nitrogen in the air. In the enriched air diver course you learn to dive with mixtures between 22% and 40% oxygen. The lower the nitrogen level the longer your time at depth will be because your body takes in less nitrogen. So the maximum bottom time on a Nitrox dive to a given depth is always higher than the maximum bottom time of an air dive to the same depth.
So why do this course you ask me? I prefer to dive with nitrox for two reasons. There are many divesites here in Bali where I would like to spend more time at depth because the coral reef reaches quite deep and I want to have more time to take pictures without worrying to much about my no decompression limits. Also if you plan to do a lot of dives for a few days it is a good idea to dive with Enriched Air. The nitrogen in the air makes you tired so if there is less nitrogen you get less tired. These are the two big advantages of diving with Enriched Air.
Anyone interested in this course? Just send us a message on facebook or visit our website. We will have a promotion coming up for this course soon. Drop us a line!

A Happy new year...
This will be our last update of the year (obviously). But first of all I want to wish everybody a happy new year!! I also want to give a big thanks to everybody who has been diving here with us at Puri Wirata Dive Resort and Bali Reef Divers. I hope you had a great bali dive experience with us and that we delivered the dive holiday you expected to have. Thank u very very much for staying with us! We hope to see u again next year.
For this reason we created a tripadvisor site for Bali Reef Divers. Feel free to comment about your experience here. Did you like diving with us? Anything you would like to see different at our dive resort? Just let us know! This is the link: Bali Reef Divers @ Tripadvisor
This is also the time to make your bookings for next high season. The rooms are filling up already and if you want to make sure you can stay at Puri Wirata Dive Resort next summer be sure to book ahead. Puri Wirata is one of the only resorts in Amed where you can dive and stay at the same place. You can, by mather of speech, dive straight from your room. So send us an email if you would like to have more information about packages, deals and rates. Sometimes we have promotions for PADI Courses and Discover Scuba Sessions.
The last two weeks the diving was a bit influenced by the weather but we managed to find some dive sites where the conditions were not too bad. Bunutan Reef and Japanese Shipwreck offer some good diving these days because there is a little bit more current. So if you are heading to Amed just have a look at the dive sites south from Bunutan Reef. Just contact is if you want to find out where the best conditions are. If you want to dive Bali this time of the year (rainy season) you have to know where to go because not every dive spot has good conditions.
We uploaded a short video as well. The stars in this one are the Jackfish at the USS Liberty dive site in Tulamben. If you dive Bali this is one of the must see dive sites! You will have to expect being in the water with a lot of people but if you haven't seen a shipwreck while diving this is a nice first try. Check out the video here: Bali Reef Divers Youtube
That's all the news for now. Be sure to book your next stay here and check back next year for more video's. See you all next year!
